We are finally going to begin the "Year of the Dragon" theme thing?
This series is actually one of my personal favorites and I must have played the first installment through at least 30 times growing up.
I haven't played it in years though and I wonder how much of it I'll remember as I go through.
I do remember grinding the second dungeon for gold to purchase the unique armor from that shop in the third town.
I don't know if I'm going to waste my time on that this time lol

I played this once a long time ago and I vaguely remember it. I do remember enjoying it though. I will have to watch some youtube videos to jog my old man memory.

It is definitely an old school RPG and they actually re-released it on GBA. I did some research and apparently the GBA version has a few differences: a brighter color palette, they fix Karn's skin tone, and they made the game significantly easier.
I will be playing the SNES version lol

Since I've been on vacation this week. I managed to get in quite a bit of time in already. While its the kind of game we built the premise of the show on, it feels like its been forever since we have played a "typical" rpg.

I've been watching a play on you tube since I do not have time to play it through. I am at the part where you get Karn. It seems like it is a lot of go to town you need item to get to the next town. Rinse. Repeat. I remember playing this though a long time ago and being pissed that the boomerang was the best weapon for a long time because I wanted a sword lol. And how did the Robot all of a sudden get sentient and then decide to kill himself?

I've played this so much growing up, but I don't remember if the Robot was already sentient.
IMO weapons that hit a whole group of enemies are superior to the single target weapons though.

The sword is cooler though. You have other characters to hit the whole group.

I agree, it is cooler.
But you maximize DPS when you can hit multiple enemies with one attack!
I will try to switch out the rang for the sword when I know a boss is coming though, but that can be hard to do as that requires knowledge of what's coming or following a walkthrough.

Where are you guys at right now? I just finished watching the youtube run. It helps to be able to fast forward through all the dungeon crawling . It seems like it got more interesting once you got more of your party. For the time it seems like it was pretty good. But I do not think I could make it through this game now. Kudos to you guys on this. It was hard for me to watch this at times lol. It is probably more interesting when you are playing it though right?...right? Way to much grinding through dungeons and fetching items without much of a reward story wise. I guess that was how things were back then though. And a boomerang for the main character was weak in my opinion If you want to be able to attack all just give the character a move that hits them all so you can keep the bad ass sword at all times lol. Another thing that seemed annoying to me was the item menu was really unorganized and seemed to take whoever was playing a while to navigate it at times(thank god for fast forward).

I think the game was great for its time and things are cliché now when they were original then. But man RPGs have come a long way since then.

It's one of my favorite games of all time lol
I did forgot how god awful the encounter rate was though.
The item menu has an option for you to organize your things, so it's never been a problem for me.

I'm sure it is more fun to play than it is to watch but it seemed like you had to back track way to much.

I know I played 2 and four in the series. If you should rank them individually, how would you rank them?
If I remeber correctly, the storyline in 4 was quite special and well, unique.

Haha, calm down Nick, I heard you on the pod and all about your love for the fifth part that is not a BoF as far as I heard it from you. Had to mess some with you on it only.

I think Breath of fire 3 was my favorite I loved Rei. I remember I rented it a bunch of times and wound up annoying my dad by saying "doesn't that beat all" too much after playing it for awhile.

I never saw that one from the start, only bits and pieces that a friend of mine played. I am thinking maybe I should skip 1 & 5 and play the third, then I got 2,3,4 atleast done haha.

I know we need people to play 4 and 5 with us and talk about it on the show >_>

Yeah.... From the reactions you have given there Nick, I would have to say that 5 feels very.... Hmmm... Interesting... Or not haha. Depending on the time we can fit it in, and if I can get an emulator working, I might at least be interested in 4! Would be fun to revisit that. My english aint top notch, but I can always work it out on some skirmitars! Lol (thinking of the iron armada )

Great episode guys! Still think the boomerang is a dumb weapon and if they wanted to give you a group attack just give you a ability that does so.
