Putting on the glasses from the childhood is easy to give it all a little headway against the "I know this game is great, enough said" way.
Good job there putting it aside by you Nick!
The BoF series are great since it gets the possibility to get a bit deeper story with the dragon part imo. There is the opening for the little extra tidbit.
Sure, there is the usual RPG... But you can transform into a dragon, how cool aint that?!1!!1111?!1

Yeah the later games in the series (barring 5) do a MUCH better job at lore and world building and getting into the history of the dragons and Ryu's lineage and such.
And the gameplay is vastly improved each time (except 5 -_-).

Yeah I am too spoiled now to give it 5s as well. When this first came out I believe it would be close to that. Now with story telling in games though its not really fair to compare.
